# Flying as an unaccompanied minor

Some airlines require passengers under a certain age to fly with their **unaccompanied minor (UM) service** — the airline escorts you through the airport and only releases you to a named adult. If that's you, Attend needs to know so event staff can be that named adult at the right gate at the right time.

## How to declare it

1. In the **Travel** step of onboarding (or when editing travel later), mark that you're flying as an unaccompanied minor.
2. **Upload proof of your UM booking** — a screenshot or PDF from the airline showing the UM service is booked. This is required; the step won't save a UM declaration without it.
3. Submit the step as normal.

## What happens next

* Your UM status shows as **pending** while event staff review your proof.
* Your **parent or guardian will also be asked to confirm** the airline booking on their side — the review only completes after they do.
* Once approved, the organizers will reach out with exact **pickup and dropoff arrangements**, usually within two weeks of the event.

<Note>
  **Uploaded the wrong file?** Upload a new one — replacing your proof resets the review to pending so staff check the new document.
</Note>

## Tips

* Book the UM service with your airline **before** filling in this step — Attend needs the confirmation, not just your intention to book it.
* Rules differ by airline (age cutoffs, fees, which flights allow UM). Check your airline's UM policy early; some don't allow UM on connecting flights.
* Questions about whether you need the UM service at all? Ask the organizers or email [attend@hackclub.com](mailto:attend@hackclub.com) — don't guess.
